Mission

Mission Statement:

The mission of NOFLAC is to educate the public, government officials, and gun club and firing range users about lead and metals contamination issues that are present at thousands of gun club and firing range locations throughout the United States. The EPA estimates that are 9000 gun clubs and shooting ranges throughout the United States, but other estimates are upwards to 30,000. Few of these gun clubs and firing ranges are currently using the EPA Best Management Practices for Lead at Outdoor Shooting Ranges, which is helpful to those clubs willing to follow its recommendations.

Lead is the primary contaminant at small arms firing ranges. It is found in both the spent bullets that must be separated from the soil and as a soil contaminant resulting from both leaching and weathering. Other contaminants can include copper, zinc, arsenic, tungsten, antimony, and PAHs. Depending on the depth of groundwater or proximity to water bodies, firing ranges have also caused water pollution concerns.
Many existing ranges are unaware of the potential to contaminate the environment and have not designed the range appropriately to avoid contamination.

The NOFLAC mission is to educate, but we will also use our resources to litigate for environmental protection at gun clubs and firing ranges that pose lead and metals contamination concerns and refuse to participate in the EPA Best Management Practices for Lead at Outdoor Shooting Ranges.

NOFLAC is not involved with any 2nd Amendment issues. We simply believe that if people use firearms then they should be responsible for any contamination caused by that use. The right to bear arms is not a right to contaminate soil and groundwater.
